A viral serum sells out, and within days a dozen lookalikes appear at a fraction of the price. Some of those lookalikes are legitimate budget alternatives with their own branding and formulas. Others are counterfeits designed to imitate the original as closely as possible, right down to the bottle shape and label font. The difference matters, because a counterfeit can contain unlisted ingredients, the wrong concentration of an active, or no active at all. You do not need lab equipment to protect yourself. A careful look at the packaging, the seller, and the product details will catch most fakes before you hand over any money.

Counterfeiters invest in looking right at first glance, but they rarely get every detail right. Compare the listing photos with the product on the brand's official website, zooming in on the label. Look for font differences, uneven spacing, blurry printing, or colours that are slightly off. Check the cap and pump: genuine airless pumps and droppers usually fit precisely and dispense evenly, while fakes often feel loose, leak, or jam after a few uses. Seals matter too. A crooked tamper seal, glue residue, or a box that does not close cleanly is a reason to pause, not a detail to ignore.

Most legitimate skincare carries a batch code stamped on the bottle or tube itself, not only on the outer box. If the code is missing, looks inkjet-printed and blurry, or is identical across many different listings, treat that as a warning sign. Where the brand offers a batch lookup tool on its own website, use it, and type the address yourself rather than following a link from the listing. Then compare the ingredient list with the official one. Counterfeits often shorten the list, drop preservatives and fragrance components, or list ingredients in an order that does not match. An ingredient list that ends abruptly after water, glycerin, and one active is incomplete, and incomplete is suspicious.

Where a product is sold predicts a lot about what it is. Authorised retailers and the brand's own store are the safest routes. A marketplace seller with a brand-new account, a handful of reviews, and prices far below every other listing deserves extra scrutiny, especially if the same seller lists many different viral brands at once. Read the negative reviews first: complaints about smell, texture, or skin reactions that do not match the genuine product are more informative than a hundred short five-star notes. Also check the return policy before you buy. A seller who refuses returns on sealed skincare, or who only communicates through vague chat replies, is making it hard for you to get your money back if the product is wrong.

Before you order, run through four steps. First, compare the listing photos side by side with the official product page. Second, confirm the batch code is present on the container and, where possible, verifiable. Third, check the seller's history and read recent reviews that mention texture, scent, and packaging. Fourth, save screenshots of the listing and your order confirmation, so you have evidence if you need to dispute the purchase. None of these steps takes more than a few minutes, and together they filter out most counterfeits. If anything feels off and you cannot verify it, skip that listing. A genuine bargain will still be there from a seller you can trust.

One last habit is worth building: keep a short note of where you bought each product and what the genuine packaging looked like when you opened it. The next time you reorder, you have a personal reference to compare against, and a fake stands out immediately. That record also makes returns and disputes far easier, because you can show exactly what changed. Skincare shopping rewards patience more than speed, and the few minutes spent checking are always cheaper than a product you cannot trust on your skin.
