Online reviews are the first thing most buyers check, and the first thing dishonest sellers learn to fake. A product with hundreds of five-star reviews can still disappoint, because some of those reviews were never written by genuine customers. Learning to spot the fakes does not require special software: it requires knowing the patterns that real reviews follow, and the patterns that fake ones cannot hide.
Real reviews arrive gradually, spread across weeks and months, with a mix of ratings and opinions. Fake reviews often arrive in a burst: dozens of five-star ratings posted within a few days, frequently just after a product launches, followed by silence. If a product has hundreds of reviews but almost no three- or four-star ratings, be suspicious, because genuine products almost always divide opinion.
Language is another clue. Fake reviews tend to be vague and interchangeable, praising a product as amazing, perfect or the best without mentioning a single specific detail. Real reviews mention specifics: the size, the material, how it held up after a month, what went wrong, and what the buyer would change. Search the review section for words like broke, small, noisy or returned, because real criticism is the hardest thing to fake convincingly.
Never trust reviews on a single page. Search the product name on other retailers, video platforms and forums, and compare what buyers say there. If a product is rated five stars on one store but draws complaints elsewhere, the store's reviews may have been filtered or incentivised. Independent video reviews are especially useful, because they show the product in use rather than in a polished listing photo.
Check the reviewers themselves where the platform allows it. A reviewer who has only ever reviewed one product, or who posts identical praise across unrelated items, is less trustworthy than one with a varied history. Also check dates: reviews written before a product was plausibly available, or reviews that mention a different product entirely, are strong signs of copied or purchased feedback.
A verified purchase badge means the reviewer bought the product through that platform, which is better than nothing, but it is not proof of honesty. Sellers can refund buyers in exchange for positive reviews, or send free products with an expectation of praise, and those reviews may still carry a verified badge. Treat the badge as a starting point, not a guarantee.
Pay special attention to reviews that disclose a free product or discount, and to those that do not disclose anything but read like advertisements. Platforms vary in how strictly they police incentivised reviews, so a badge on one site may mean less than on another. The safest approach is to weigh verified reviews more heavily, while still reading the critical ones first.
Start by sorting reviews from lowest to highest and reading the one- and two-star reviews first: they reveal the product's real weaknesses. Then read a sample of recent reviews from the last few months, because products change between batches and older praise may describe a different version. Finally, search the product name plus words like complaint, scam or fake to find discussions outside the store.
If the reviews still look suspicious, buy from a seller with a clear return policy so you can test the product yourself with minimal risk. A good return policy is the ultimate protection against fake reviews, because it lets you become the reviewer. When in doubt, wait: genuine products accumulate genuine reviews over time, while fakes often fade when the burst ends.
